Thailand Targets Female Visitors

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently announced plans to launch ‘Lady’s Month’ during August 2016.

In the last few years, compound growth in the number of female arrivals to Thailand from overseas destinations averaged 11.4% per annum, whilst the compound growth in male arrivals was only 5.9%. According to the TAT, female travelers are also the main decision-makers when it comes to organizing vacations to the Land of Smiles so they want to highlight activities that tap into this key market.

A report in the Bangkok Post, highlighted activities like sampling Thai cuisine, visiting spas and going to the beach as the most popular pursuits for foreign female travellers in 2015. In the same year, foreign female expenditure on Thai food was around THB41.5 billion (US$1.1 billion), spa and wellness services THB13.1 billion (US$373 million) and seaside trips THB13.3 billion (US$378.5 million).

However, while these are reported to be the most popular activities, some groups of women – particularly those staying in luxury accommodation in Thailand’s private villas – also enjoy other holiday options.

Private snorkelling and kayaking are popular activities selected by mums when arranging special excursions with families on southern islands like Koh Samui and Phuket. On the other hand, scuba diving is particularly popular amongst younger groups of female friends on holiday.

Since Thailand’s Mother’s Day celebrations fall on August 12th this year, the TAT chose the same month to promote the female visitor theme to both domestic and overseas markets. It also revealed plans to team up with airlines and hotels to entice  ladies with special promotions.

Six unique activities will also be launched to attract female travelers, including the Lady Golf Challenge, Lady Celebrities to Thailand, Ladies Photo Contest in Thailand 2016, Lady in Thai Fabrics, Lady Bloggers’ Journey and Mobile Application ‘Lady Journey’.

The TAT have appointed women’s professional golfer Vani Kapoor as the ambassador for the golfing activities and women tourists will be able to buy golf package tours where they can join golfing celebrities from Japan and South Korea.

The Ladies Photo Contest will promote tourism sites with photographs of the Kingdom snapped by famous photographers, and female celebrities from South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore will also be invited to Thailand to boost the campaign’s online profile.
